WATERFRONT
design 6 | spring 2017

With a site along the waterfront of Savannah, Georgia, the objective of the project was to tie public and private space together to both the urban and the building scale. In my analysis I concluded that the buildings’ edge created a barrier separating the historically private and public sectors of the city. The decision was to continue the linear motion of the buildings but shift the edge to the water. This was done by creating a floating glass hood suspended from the structure hovering above. This was to allow view of the water and sky from the city rather than a continuation of opaque building facade. Beneath the glass hood would be a large, open space acting as one of Savannah’s many public squares while also being able to transform into a temporary farmers market. Upon crosses the bridge one is greeted by a landscape feature on the upper level of the construction in an effort to extend the green space of the city to the waterfront. As one continues they pass the culinary school where they can attend sessions or descend below into the open courtyard.

Two circulation towers would be placed on either side of the road and act as two opposing movements; one anchored into a large mass and the other being held away delicately from nearby walls and overhead. The drop in ground allows for public outdoor space near the water’s edge while keeping the construction floating above it in order to capture the pushing and pulling of the city at an urban scale. The ground features include a fish pond for farming along with resting space near the fountain to enjoy the view of the water.
