This project is derived from Catalan Modernism and the prominence of Antoni Gaudi’s work in Barcelona, which was heavily influenced by natural and anatomical forms.
The building mass is punctured by two atrium spaces, with one spanning across the street and lightly touching the ground. This motion ties together the two sides of the street and creates a landmark within the neighborhood. The organic structure further cradles the residential units, emphasizing its fragility on a much larger scale.
To the north of the structure lies a circular depression in the ground, echoing the form of the two atrium spaces. Three perforated metal sculptures anchor the edges of the space and provide a flexible outdoor room for Gracia’s residents to gather for political discussions, cultural events, and other activities.
